Jess Orr is passionate about continuous improvement, and she has nearly a decade of experience in a variety of industries, from rubber manufacturing to automotive. The time she spent working for Toyota were particularly instrumental in her development.
Jess earned a Bachelors' Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from Virginia Tech, as well as an Associate's Degree in Engineering Science from Monroe Community College. During this time, she first became exposed to lean and Six Sigma principles while working as a co-op for General Electric.
Jess' first post-collegiate job was in the rubber industry. As a manufacturing engineer, Jess was frequently out on the production floor running presses and working with the operators to improve the processes. She was also responsible for compression tooling design and manufacturing. During this time, Jess obtained her Six Sigma Black Belt from the AIG Group. The principles and tools she learned had a tremendous impact on her, and she considers this training to have been the most valuable of her career.
Jess then began her experience with Toyota beginning in pre-production stamping design. One of her projects, a quantitative method for shock line defect detection, was selected as Toyota's Top North American Project for the 2013 Innovation Showcase. Jess had the opportunity to present the project at Toyota's Motomachi plant in Japan.
In Quality Engineering at Toyota, Jess' responsibilities ranged from supplier development to new model preparation, all within the framework of TPS (Toyota Production System). Jess was promoted to Assistant Manager with a team of five engineers, and her team successfully drove down defects through strategic partnership with key suppliers and internal departments.
Jess currently works as full-time continuous improvement practitioner, where she draws upon her experience and passion for continuous improvement. She thoroughly enjoys coaching others and helping them succeed as well as executing a variety of performance excellence projects.
